Twisted Viking Torc (Torque) – Handcrafted with Traditional Techniques

This handcrafted Viking torc is inspired by an 11th-century Danish type torque, a style widely worn across Scandinavia and early medieval Europe. The twisted form reflects one of the most ancient Northern metalworking traditions, used to symbolize strength, prestige, protection, and social rank.

The torc is made from either pewter or nickel silver—a durable copper alloy containing copper, nickel, and zinc, historically valued for its silvery appearance despite containing no actual silver. Its inner diameter of 16 cm and its solid weight of approximately 150 g create a piece that is substantial, wearable, and reminiscent of original Viking neck rings.

Viking Age Torcs in History

Between 793–1066 AD, torcs were worn throughout Scandinavia, the Baltic, and among many tribes across lands that now include Ukraine, Poland, Germany, France, Denmark, and the British Isles. They signified wealth, honor, and status, and were sometimes awarded for acts of bravery. Both men and women wore them, though men's torcs tended to be heavier and more elaborate.

Famous archaeological finds, such as the Hiddensee Treasure of Germany (1873), include torcs weighing more than 1.8 kg, demonstrating their cultural importance and the extraordinary skill of Viking metalworkers.

Designs ranged from simple to highly ornate, incorporating animal-head terminals, spirals, dragon motifs, twisted wire patterns, or intricate braiding. Twisted torcs were especially common in silver and bronze, echoing symbolic themes of continuity and protection.

This modern recreation follows those same design principles, reflecting the artistry, symbolism, and durability valued by early medieval craftspeople.
