Algiz-Rune Workshop
Norse art traditions began during the Ice Age and Neolithic times. What we know as Viking Age Pagan art represents the highest level of Norse art development and is the result of interactions with other European and Asian cultures.
During the Viking Age, the Norse people were practical, and many symbols found on historical Viking jewelry symbolize divine protection. Norse art is characterized by the extraordinary ornamentation of everyday objects. Even minor items were elaborately and artistically decorated with runes, zoomorphic motifs, and other designs.
High-status Viking weapons, such as kings’ swords, axes, and spears, were often decorated by cutting grooves into the iron axehead and then pounding contrasting silver wire into the grooves to create intricate designs.
Many things changed after the Vikings adopted Christianity, but that’s another story.
At Algiz-Rune Workshop, we work hard to recreate and preserve the crafts and traditions of the brave Norse people!
