Viking Round Shield Replica – Handcrafted Historical Shield (80 cm)

This Viking round shield replica is a historically informed reconstruction based on archaeological and visual sources from the Viking Age (circa 9th–11th century). Produced with attention to period-appropriate proportions and construction methods, it reflects the type of shield used in both warfare and daily life across Scandinavia and the North Atlantic world.

Made as a full-size functional replica, this shield is suitable for historical reenactment, LARP, museum display, and professional film or television productions.

Materials and construction

  • Diameter: approximately 80 cm (historical size)

  • Core: white plywood shield board

  • Boss: steel, hand-forged

  • Metal fittings: hand-forged nails and hardware

  • Edge: leather rim, hand-stitched with linen rope

  • Grip: solid wooden handle, reinforced at the boss

  • Finish: hand-painted and aged for an antique appearance

The shield features a central iron boss protecting the hand, with a traditional single-hand grip mounted across the rear. All visible metal elements are hand-forged, avoiding modern industrial fittings.

Historical character

Round shields of this size were common throughout the Viking Age and are well documented in archaeological finds, iconography, and written sources. The painted surface and visible wood grain echo surviving evidence of decorated shields, while the leather edging and stitched construction reflect practical reinforcement methods used to extend the shield’s lifespan.

The finish is intentionally aged, with surface wear and tonal variation designed to resemble a used historical object rather than a modern decorative item.

Use and applications

This shield is suitable for:

  • LARP and historical reenactment

  • Viking and early medieval film or television productions

  • Stage combat and visual display for main characters

  • Museum education and exhibition settings

  • Collectors of historical arms and equipment

This is a replica intended for visual authenticity and historical presentation. As with all handmade items, slight variations in wood grain, paint tone, stitching, and metal finish are expected and are considered part of the object’s character.

Craft approach

The shield is produced using traditional workshop methods rather than mass production. Emphasis is placed on correct proportions, visible handwork, and materials consistent with historical practice, resulting in a piece that balances durability with authenticity.
